TV.Com Visit to the set of Castle
There’s a three-dimensional Clue game on the set of “Castle.” But don’t ask anyone how to play it.
“We tried,” says Molly Quinn, who plays Richard Castle’s daughter. “But even Nathan couldn’t figure it out.”
Nathan — Nathan Fillion, the actor who plays the best-selling novelist — is usually game for things like that but gave up, rationalizing it was just another set piece.
One in a sea of plenty.
The kitchen features state-of-the-art appliances, oh-so-hip backsplash tiles and atmospheric lighting.
The living room has comfy chairs (and that Clue game). A bedroom looks like it came out of the latest shelter magazine.
Castle’s office is even better. In addition to a battery of old typewriters, it boasts a complete collection of Castle’s books (look inside — they’re just covers), a vase full of swords and an expansive desktop that’s as current as these things get.
“My favorite thing is this,” Fillion says, pointing to the big-screen TV. “And this photograph (of a staircase) I find mesmerizing. But I wouldn’t have this carpet,” he says, pointing to a white shag rug. “It sheds like you can’t believe. If you walk on it, it leaves a nice white haze.”
The rest of it? “I could live in this place,” he says.
To make it even more like home, Fillion says he might add set pieces from past series — “Serenity,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Dr. Horrible.” “Just to see if anyone notices.”
Even though it’s barely more than a year old, “Castle” has drawn plenty of attention, giving ABC a strong drama on Monday nights and Fillion a challenging role.
Earlier, he was eager to leave “Housewives” because it didn’t give him much to do. “Castle,” however, more than fills his days. “You’re not completely taxed. But we do do 14-hour days,” Fillion says. “I’m busy. And I like that.”
For Stana Katic, the actress who plays his muse, Detective Kate Beckett, “Castle” is more complex.
Sitting on another corner of the soundstage, she admits it’s much more than the shows it has been compared to — “Moonlighting,” “The Thin Man.”
“I almost see parallels to ‘Star Trek,’” she says. “You know, the strong female captain. There’s an element of Rosalind Russell and a little Judi Dench in her.
“When she’s going after a criminal, she’s no-holds-barred. When she’s dealing with a victim, she’s much more sensitive. And when she’s dealing with her personal life, she’s girlish.”
Toss in the quixotic Castle and anything can happen. Indeed, viewers have seen their relationship ebb and flow over a season and a half.
Now, Katic says, she’s very much the straight man to Fillion.
Susan Sullivan — who plays Castle’s no-nonsense mother — brings out a different side of the author. “She’s a strong woman,” Sullivan says. “But she’s struggling.
“When I read the part, there were all these lines like ‘doll face’ and ‘kiddo.’ I went to my husband, who’s a shrink, and said, ‘This is such a wonderful part but it isn’t me.’ He said, ‘Well, you’re an actress, act it.’ And I said, ‘Well, there is that, isn’t there?’”
She signed on and found the role fulfilling — “it was charming and funny and it said something interesting about aging.”
Too often, she says, actresses want to hold on to their looks. “They look great, but their faces don’t move. They don’t allow themselves to age and they miss out on a lot of great roles.”
As the most demanding woman in Castle’s life, she’s able to control him in ways others can’t. Add in a daughter and a girlfriend and Castle becomes as multi-dimensional as that Clue game.
Fillion? “He’s a goofball,” Quinn says. “But he knows how to get his work done.”
When the cast assembled in New York, he arranged a mystery tour of the city. “He’s so smart,” Quinn adds. “And he’s created a family atmosphere for us. He’s very comfortable to be around.”
Just like the set.
2010 Comic-Con Arrival Photos
There’s not many photos of Nathan, Stana, and the rest of the cast @ Comic-Con that are available yet. But however, I did find a few photos of Nathan, Stana, and Jon arriving at the event. You can find those in the gallery. Also, keep an eye out, as I update the site with more photos from the event, hopefully of all the cast.
