Interview With Tamala

posted by Jessica | with No Comments | in Interviews, Tamala Jones

Castle just wouldn’t be the same without the smart and sassy Tamala Jones, who fans have come to love as Dr. Lanie Parish, the show’s medical examiner.  In addition to Castle, the Pasadena, California native has appeared in a number of films and TV shows, including Ghost Whisperer and CSI Miami. In this interview, she offers some insights into her character and a few interesting teasers about Lanie’s role in episodes to come.

Do you go through some sort of medical training for your role as medical examiner, or pore over medical books? You sound like you know what you’re talking about.
Tamala Jones: Thank you so much for saying that. No, I don’t do medical training. I watch The First 48 on A&E., Dr. G Medical Examiner and Forensic Files. Those shows fill up my whole DVR collection.  I watch them all the time, especially Dr. G Medical Examiner because I like the way she talks about her subjects as if they were still alive.  I like when she opens them up and finds out what they ate in the last hour, what they experienced in their different organs, the damage.  She’s amazing. I love her language, the way she rattles it off.  So l like to emulate her a lot.

Do you look forward to being more instrumental in solving cases?

TJ: Oh, yes. We’re getting into that this season. They’ll be going deeper into my character. There’s going to be a full episode about Lanie so you’ll get to know her a little better.

Can you give us a little preview?

TJ: I can only say that you’ll get the background story on Lanie. They were going to do a kidnapping episode about her, but they decided against that. They’re still working on her story line, which may include some romance with Esposito. Of course, the relationship will not be that open, so they’ll have to catch her with Esposito. And Beckett may ask her, “What was that all about?” Lanie is someone who won’t want to make a relationship really public.

How nice is it to have that fan support for your character?

TJ: It’s really a beautiful thing for me personally because Lanie was only supposed to be a guest cast member on the show. She didn’t have a lot to do on the pilot. But the network ended up liking me, saying, we know her credits, her history, let’s make her a regular. I tested high and I really owe my position on the show to the fans. It’s very humbling. I will always do the best job I can possibly do for them and hopefully never let them down.  I’m just so glad to be a part of such a great show with Nathan and the rest of the cast. We’re like family.

Jon Huertas: I hope Castle & Beckett hook up — but nothing more!

posted by Jessica | with 1 Comment | in Interviews, Jon Huertas

Although the law and love tend to take precedence on “Castle,” the hit cop dramedy has recently spent a fair amount of time fleshing out its supporting characters and that’s something actor Jon Huertas is excited for the audience to see more of in season three.

In addition to expanding upon Esposito’s love life, in the seventh episode we’ll see the team face their fiercest foe yet. But according to Jon, the biggest killer might emerge if Castle & Beckett actually tried to be a real couple.

PopWrap: Man, you weren’t very nice to Castle last week!
Jon Huertas: I was mad! I thought were were boys! I wasn’t mad because he didn’t call Beckett, I was upset because he didn’t call me! It was funny though because I was so excited to see Nathan again that it was kind of hard to scowl at Castle [laughs].

PW: Is the vibe on set different in those first days back?
Jon: It can get a little crazy and rambunctious, but we try and keep it professional on set. But it’s like a family reunion. For nine months, I see them more than I see my family and friends, so everyone involved has become a family member to me. There were perma-smiles during the whole first episode.

PW: What can you tease about tonight’s episode?
Jon: It’s about a psychic – she literally predicted her own murder and has a daughter who might share those gifts. But we don’t know if the daughter should be a suspect because her mom was a famous psychic, so she might be trying to steal the limelight. Also, there’s some fun stuff with the team being very skeptical at first.

PW: Who is the biggest believer?
Jon: Oh my god, Stana [Katic] would definitely be a believer. I’m definitely not, the supernatural is hard for me to swallow. I’m a realist. I remember we shot a scene last year in the cemetery and Stana was kind of apprehensive about it – stepping on graves. Meanwhile I basically set up a hammock in between two headstones [laughs]. They’re asleep – what’s the problem?

PW: Beckett & Castle’s flirtation is no secret to the guys — what do you Jon, and then you as Esposito, think about them hooking up?
Jon: Well there’s a lot of Jon in Esposito, so we’re on the same page: it would be cool for Castle & Beckett to hook up. It would be great fodder for Esposito to play with – tease them a bit. I don’t think it would detrimental to the show. But a full blown relationship might actually hurt the show. Some fans call them Cas-Kett. I think the show might be short-lived if we get them together too soon.

PW: A rather ironic nickname in that case.
Jon: Exactly. If we had Cas-Kett, it might be the funeral for the show. The lure is that sexual tension – not even sexual, I think there’s a potential relationship tension too. the audience loves that so sometimes we have to divert their attention elsewhere. I actually heard two of the other characters on the show are going to end up together, so..

PW: Nice. what else can you tease about season three?
Jon: The episode we’re shooting right now, the seventh, is my favorite so far. It’s about a serial killer, which poses a much bigger challenge to our team because we tend to always solve the murders. This guy [played by Lee Tergesen] gets away and he’s going to come back. But there’s a huge twist!

CASTLE – “Punked” – Castle and Beckett look into the murder of a young mathematician gunned down with a 200-year-old bullet, sparking some wild theories by Castle about a time-travelling killer. When their investigation uncovers a tricked-out DeLorean and a suspect in Victorian clothing, is it possible Castle’s crazy idea has some validity? This winding tale twists through the towers of Wall Street and into the world of a secret steampunk society that embraces the romance and simplicity of the past, while coupling it with the hope and promise of the future.
